Terms of Service
Last updated 1 September 2026. Pentimento is operated by Matthew Carolan, a sole proprietor in Massachusetts, United States. “We” means Pentimento; “you” means the person or organisation using it.
What Pentimento is right now
Pentimento is in early access. You can record in your browser, host what you record, cut it by editing its transcript, and export the result. Anything the site marks as not built yet is a plan, not a commitment, and you should not subscribe on the strength of it. If a feature matters to you and it is not working today, ask before you pay.
Our pricing promise
These are commitments, not marketing. They are part of this agreement and we are bound by them:
Your price is locked
The price you sign up at is the price you keep for as long as you stay subscribed. We do not raise it on renewal.
We will never reclassify you
We will not move you to a more expensive plan because of your email domain, your traffic, or a guess about the kind of organisation you are. Your plan changes when you change it.
No surprise invoice
If anything would cost more than your plan, we tell you before it bills — not after. Overage is $0.05/GB/month and you see your usage before you reach the cap.
Concretely: the price you sign up at is the price you keep for as long as your subscription stays active. We will not raise it at renewal. We will not move you to a higher tier because of your email domain, your traffic, your industry, or any guess about what kind of organisation you are — your plan changes when you change it. If we ever change prices for new customers, you keep yours.
Storage above your plan is billed at $0.05 per GB per month, and we will tell you before it bills rather than after. You can see your usage in your library at any time.
Getting your videos out
Your videos are yours. You can download your originals at any time, including after you cancel and including if you stop paying. We will not hold your library hostage to a subscription, and export will not become a paid feature.
If we ever shut Pentimento down, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice and keep exports working for that whole period.
Your content
You keep ownership of everything you upload. You grant us only the permission we need to run the service: to store your files, transcode them into streaming formats, generate transcripts and captions, and deliver them to people you share them with. That permission ends when you delete the content, and we do not use your videos to train anything or show them to anyone you have not shared them with.
You are responsible for having the right to upload what you upload.
What you may not do
Do not upload anything unlawful, anything you do not have the rights to, or anything designed to harm people. Do not use Pentimento to distribute malware, to host content sexualising minors, or to harass anyone. Do not attempt to break, overload or circumvent the limits of the service, and do not resell raw storage or bandwidth as if it were your own product.
We can suspend or remove content that breaks these rules. Where we can do so safely, we will tell you why and give you a chance to export first.
Accounts and cancellation
You need an account to save a recording. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account. You can cancel at any time and your subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for. We do not currently offer self-serve account deletion — email us and we will delete your account and everything in it.
Availability
We do not promise a specific uptime figure, because at this stage we could not honestly back one. We will tell you about planned interruptions. Pentimento is provided as it is, and we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Liability
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim relating to Pentimento is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost profits or lost data. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited.
Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose. That is honest advice about any hosting service, including ours.
Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a way that materially affects you, we will email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. The pricing promise above is the exception: we will not weaken it for an existing subscriber, at any notice period.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States, and any dispute belongs in the state or federal courts located there.
