The Vimeo price increase, explained
What changed, what people are actually being charged, and how to get your library out if you decide to leave.
What happened
Vimeo was acquired by Bending Spoons in late 2025 for roughly $1.38 billion. In January 2026 the company cut a large share of the workforce, reportedly including the entire video team.
In February 2026, Vimeo began replacing its subscription tiers. Existing customers received emails telling them they would be moved automatically to a new plan at their next renewal. For many people that plan costs several times what they had been paying.
What people are being charged
Reported figures from affected customers, as publicly discussed:
- €15.60 → €120One subscriber was moved automatically onto a Professional plan they had not chosen — an increase of roughly 670%.
- $15 → $70Renewal notices sent to users on older, cheaper plans.
- 34–180%Increases reported across mid-tier and advanced accounts.
These are figures reported by customers rather than published by Vimeo. Check your own renewal notice — your number may differ.
Why this pattern is familiar
Bending Spoons has acquired and repriced consumer software before, including WeTransfer and Evernote. If you are deciding whether this is a one-off adjustment or a direction, that history is the most useful evidence available.
Your options
Stay and pay. If your renewal increase is small and your library is deeply embedded across your site, the switching effort may not be worth it. That is a legitimate answer.
Move to another host. Wistia, SproutVideo, Spotlightr, Dacast and others all host business video. Prices vary widely — Wistia starts around $79/month and SproutVideo from about $10/month depending on plan.
Move to YouTube. Free, but it puts ads and suggested videos in front of your customers and pulls them away from your site. Fine for reach, generally poor for a course or a product page.
How to get your videos out of Vimeo
You own your videos and you can retrieve them. Vimeo provides direct download links through its API for accounts on a paid plan, using tokens with the public, private and video_files scopes. You can also download individual videos from the web interface.
The tedious part is not the download. It is that every video on your website is embedded with a Vimeo URL, so moving hosts means finding and replacing each one. On a large library that is a genuinely unpleasant afternoon, and it is the main reason people stay somewhere they have stopped wanting to be.
